Four steps when your EV runs out of charge

Get safe first
Turn on hazard lights and move as far off the travel lanes as you can. If you are in danger or blocking traffic, call 911 or CHP first.

Freeway, direction, nearest exit or mile marker, or the cross streets and parking lot name.

A technician runs a supervised Level 2 session so you can reach the nearest practical charging station.
Compatibility and limitations
Mobile EV charging provides emergency range recovery only. Charging speed and range added vary by vehicle, battery condition and environment. Service is generator-powered and supervised at all times. It is not a substitute for a fixed charging station.
Mobile charging is a good fit when…
- Your EV ran low or out of charge but is otherwise working
- You need enough range to reach a nearby charger
- The car is parked somewhere safe and accessible
- Your vehicle accepts Level 2 AC through J1772 or a Tesla adapter
Towing or repair is better when…
- A fault or warning light, or the car will not accept a charge
- 12-volt or high-voltage battery failure
- Damaged charging port or collision damage
- The car is in an unsafe spot or you need to travel far beyond the nearest charger
- Emergency range recovery only — this is not a full charge and not a substitute for a fixed charging station.
- Range added depends on your vehicle, battery condition, temperature and how long we charge.
- Your vehicle must be able to accept Level 2 AC charging through a J1772 connector or a Tesla adapter.
- We cannot repair mechanical, 12-volt, high-voltage battery or charging-port faults. Those may require towing or repair.
- The vehicle must be parked somewhere safe and legal for a technician and portable equipment to work.

Roadside EV charging questions
Can you charge my EV on a freeway shoulder?
Only if it is safe. Narrow shoulders and fast traffic can make on-site charging unsafe. If CHP or the location makes it unsafe, a tow to a safer spot or a charger may be the right option, and we will tell you so.
Why do EVs run out of charge around Sacramento?
Common causes include summer heat and air-conditioning use, stop-and-go traffic on I-80, I-5 and US-50, cold mornings in winter, and public chargers that are busy or out of service.

When is towing or repair necessary?
When the problem is not just low charge. If your EV shows a fault warning, will not accept a charge, has a 12-volt or high-voltage battery problem, a damaged charging port, or was in a collision, mobile charging will not fix it and towing or repair is the right call. We will tell you honestly if we cannot help.
